October 16 is World Food Day

World Food Day 2016

October 16 is World Food Day, an annual event organized by the United Nations. The motto for this year is “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.” One of the biggest issues related to climate change is food security. The world’s poorest are being hit hardest by higher temperatures and an increasing frequency in weather-related disasters. At the same time, the global population is growing steadily and is expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050. To meet such a heavy demand, agriculture and food systems will need to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change and become more resilient, productive, and sustainable.

This situation also changes the demands placed on technologies used to manufacture, process, and transport food. Bosch Packaging Technology offers a wide range of solutions to help ensure food is packaged safely and sustainably.

Sustainable packaging solution
Thanks to a new process, dry goods such as sugar, grain, flour, and powder can be packaged using sustainable, dust-tight mono-material paper instead of in plastic films and without the need for any additional plastic components. It is the world’s first sealed paper packaging and was developed by Bosch Packaging Technology in collaboration with Swedish paper specialist BillerudKorsnäs. Retailers and users alike can enjoy clean shelves, a high level of product protection, and with it improved product quality. BillerudKorsnäs provided its expertise in optimizing paper’s mechanical properties, producing a type of mono-material paper that is sourced from sustainable forests, tearproof, and recyclable. Bosch Packaging Technology brought its competence as a leading provider in the field. And it was Bosch engineers who developed the world’s first vertical flow wrapping machine (VFFS) that is capable of sealing paper. “Together we came up with a solution that will forever change the packaging market,” says Joachim Dittrich, head of Bosch Packaging Technology’s Liquid Food business unit. This VFFS packaging machine turns the paper into a tearproof and – most importantly – sealed form of paper packaging that adds value on two counts: food is not wasted and the material is as eco-friendly as can be.

More food safety and extended shelf life
Bosch Packaging Technology is improving the way food is packaged the world over. In South Africa, for example, the company’s aseptic filling technology is now being used by food producer RCL Foods for Mageu, a hugely popular corn extract drink. Packaged this way, Mageu stays fresh for up to one year even without refrigeration; Bosch is playing a key role in keeping this product safe through its hygienic filling and packaging.

Save Food
Worldwide, almost a third of all food produced is lost before it reaches consumers, and missing or inadequate packaging is one of the causes. That is why Bosch Packaging Technology was among the founding members of the United Nations’ SAVE FOOD initiative launched at the interpack trade fair in Düsseldorf in 2011. Interpack 2017 is approaching and Bosch Packaging Technology will once again be there to show how its technology helps improve people’s quality of life the world over.
